Check ups, cleans and Fluoride

Here at the Family Dental Group we are true believers that prevention is the best way to approach your dental health. This is why we have made it our mission to educate our patients and give them the tools to be able to avoid tooth decay and gum disease.

With the introduction of our Hygiene Program and Active Maintenance system, we offer the best possible treatment to all of our patients, no matter what age they are.

We recommend having Dental check-ups with our Dentists and a Clean done by our highly skilled Hygienists 2 times a year.

We also recommend taking some intra oral bite wings x-rays and sometimes even an OPG x-ray every 2 years to be able to catch potential decay and bone problems early.

Children & Preventive Dentistry

The sooner your child visits a dentist, the better. Preventative appointments can help avoid major issues. The team of experienced dentists at Family Dental Group are very family-oriented and will endeavour to make sure your child is comfortable and happy throughout their consultation. Teaching kids healthy habits when they're young gives them a better chance of having a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. Regular brushing and flossing helps reduce plaque build-up.

Our clinicians will also assess the possibility of Orthodontic treatment, being able to determine if early intervention is required.

Fillings

A plug of material inserted into a tooth to replace missing tooth substance, fillings can be made from various materials, such as amalgam and composite. They also come in a range of colours, depending on what material they're made from. Amalgam is silver, made from silver, tin, copper alloy mixed with mercury, while composite is white, a liquid mixture that hardens instantly under UV light, made from resin matrix with filler particles of glass or set resin.

Our dentists will assess your teeth at your check up appointment and determine if there is any need to replace existing defective fillings or repaired new teeth decay. A wide range of options are available, we will explained all of the different options and make sure that the best materials are used.

Root Canal Therapy

Sometimes the nerve of the tooth can get inflamed or even die due to various reasons. Decay being the main one.

This can be very painful. What a Root Canal Treat does is remove dead or inflamed pulp inside the tooth in order to save the tooth from extraction and eliminate any pain. Family Dental Group can remove the pulp, clean the root canal, sterilise and shape the tooth so they can be completely sealed with a filling material to prevent further infection. You may need to book several appointments, depending on how long the infection takes to clear. A crown may be necessary to avoid the tooth fracturing in the future.

Onlays & Inlays

Indirect fillings to restore cavities within your teeth, onlays and inlays consist of a solid substance, such as gold or porcelain and are cemented into place. Onlays and inlays are virtually the same, but onlays extend to replace a cusp.

Here at the Family Dental Group, we have a Cerec machine. This enable our dentists to be able to do Onlays and Inlays in just 1 visit! No second appointment required.

They way that happens is we remove the old filling, with the Cerec digital scanner we make a digital impression of the tooth and on the software the dentist will design a custom made porcelain Inlay or Onlay to fit in the tooth cavity.

There is a vast variety of types of porcelains with different shades to match almost all teeth colours. Our dentist will choose the appropriate porcelain required for your particular case as well as match the colour of your tooth so we can achieve much better aesthetics as well as return function to the tooth.

Crowns

Crowns, also known as dental caps or tooth caps, encase the tooth and are used to rebuild broken or decayed teeth. While strengthening the damaged tooth, they also provide an aesthetic improvement for your mouth.

Usually an impression of your teeth will be needed, but in our practice we are very proud to provide this treatment without the need for impressions or a second appointment.

Veneers

Family Dental Group can help you with a range of veneers, which are fine porcelain or composite pieces bonded to the front surface of your teeth to change the colour and shape if required of your teeth, hide stains and replace small fractured pieces of enamel to improve appearance.

After a small portion of your tooth is removed, and depending on what type of veneer you choose (composite or porcelain) we either build up your tooth with composite (white filling) or a porcelain veneer using our Cerec machine.

With the composite veneers we take an impression at the time of the exam so we can create a study model and do a mock up of how your teeth could potentially look. Once we both agree on a shape and colour, we then make a suck down tray with the agreed teeth shape. We use that tray as a guide to rebuild the front of your teeth with a flowable composite.

If you choose the porcelain veneers then at Family dental Group we use our Cerec machine. After the tooth is shaped to gain space for the porcelain, we use our Cerec digital scanner to make a digital impression of the teeth we are rebuilding. We then design the Veneers in the software, and the veneers are milled in our Cerec 3D milling unit and bonded to your tooth.

Bridgework

If you have any teeth missing, Family Dental Group can permanently attach artificial teeth to your remaining teeth using a bridge. Made from two crowns on either side of the gap, the false teeth are called "pontics" and can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain or a combination or materials. The bridge is either metal or porcelain framework with bonded tooth colour porcelain.

In most cases an impression of the prepared teeth and the missing tooth is taken and sent to one of Newcastle's local dental laboratories. In the mean time a temporary bridge is made to protect teeth from sensitivity and movements.

They will make the bridge to our instructions. About 7-10 days later we will receive it back, the temporary crowns are removed and the bridge is bonded onto the abutment teeth.

In other cases we can use our Cerec machine to make your bridge in just 1 visit! No temporary crowns, no second appointment.

Usually an impression of your teeth will be needed, but in our practice we are very proud to provide this treatment without the need for impressions or a second appointment depending on the length of the missing teeth gap, the occlusion, and other factors that may influence the long term success of this treatment.

They way that happens is we do a crown prep on the abutment teeth on each side of the gap, with the Cerec digital scanner we make a digital impression of the tooth and on the software the dentist will design a custom made porcelain bridge to fit over the abutment teeth and replace the gap with a pontic.

Implants

A dental implant is a Titanium screw that acts like an artificial tooth root that is implanted into the jawbone, they are made from extremely strong and durable biocompatible material. The procedure is as simple as a tooth extraction. After the Implant its place, its left undisturbed under the gums until the bone heals around it, this process is called osseointegration. Once this occurs, the Implant its uncovered and the post and crown is then place on top of it to replace the missing tooth.

This can either be done by taking an impression and sending it away to one of Newcastle's local dental laboratories.

The Family Dental Group has the option of making your implant crown in 1 visit with our Cerec machine. No temporary crowns, no second visits, no impression.

They way that happens with the Cerec digital scanner we make a digital impression of the implant abutment and on the software the dentist will design a custom made porcelain crown to fit over the abutment teeth and replace the tooth.

Teeth Whitening

Age, stains and wear and tear all contribute to the colour of your teeth. If you'd like a whiter, brighter smile then Family Dental Group is the place to go. Depending on what condition your teeth are in, your teeth may be suitable for whitening, but a healthy gum and healthy teeth are essential for any whitening to work, so a check up and a clean are a most before any whitening treatment.

There are a couple of different whitening options for you.

The first one is to make you a custom made whitening tray so you can do home whitening treatment. We do this by taking an impression and sending that away to one of Newcastle's local dental laboratories for tray confection. 7-10 days later we get the trays and we provide you with the whitening gels to put in the trays and over your teeth anywhere from 1 hour to overnight, every night for 10 days (pending on what strength we provide).

The other option is the chair side treatment in our office. This will give a more dramatic result as the strengths of the gels are higher. We do this over a 60 minutes appointment were we paint the whitening gels onto the teeth we want to whitening.

For any of the options we recommend the use of Tooth Mouse 2 times a day for 1 week before the whitening treatment is done to lower the post treatment sensitivity.

The result will depend on the condition your teeth were in before the consultation and it may be necessary to have artificial teeth or veneers replaced to match your final tooth colour.

Orthodontics (braces)

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that specialises in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities (malocclusion). It generally involves the use of such things as braces, removable appliances, functional appliances or headgear to move the teeth or jaws into an ideal relationship.

Orthodontic treatment is frequently performed to improve a person's appearance by straightening the teeth. However, an attractive smile is just one of the benefits. Crowded and overlapping teeth are harder to clean and can increase the risk of tooth decay, gum disease and eventual tooth loss. Having your teeth straightened will make it easier for you to look after them.

A malocclusion may also contribute to speech impairments and increase the risk of trauma if teeth are prominent. Abnormal or uneven wear of tooth surfaces can also occur if there is poor alignment of the teeth or jaws. In cases of deep bite, the lower front teeth can bite into the gum behind the upper front teeth causing damage. Bringing the teeth, lips and jaws into proper alignment results in better function, easier cleansing and increased confidence and self-esteem.

Braces are the first thing many people think of when they consider getting their teeth straightened. But braces have come a long way with a choice now available of classic metal and clear styles, braces that adhere to the inner surface of the teeth, colourful options and even "invisible" braces.

And apart from needing to spend extra time brushing and flossing, and visiting your dentist and orthodontist, wearing braces won't significantly affect your lifestyle.

The popular image of teeth straightening begins and ends with pimply teens wearing braces. But the truth is, anyone can benefit from orthodontic treatment, including adults. Treatment usually starts for most people however from about the age of 12 when the baby teeth of childhood are replaced by a full set of adult, or permanent teeth.
